Position No. 54975 - Postdoctoral Fellow in Earth Sciences (Seismotectonics/Paleoseismology)
Department of Earth Sciences

Location: Dallas, Texas
Open Date: Aug 16, 2023

Description:
Position No. 54975. The Department of Earth Sciences in Dedman College at Southern Methodist University invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral fellow to work on the paleoseismology of the Austral subduction zone, in Patagonia and on projects that investigate the seismotectonics of the Patagonian Andes beginning June 2024. Specifically, this postdoc will work to establish a paleoseismic record of subaqueous mass-wasting deposits preserved in lacustrine infill of Patagonian lakes. Establishing the record will involve 1) analyzing the sedimentary cores extracted from the lakes, 2) interpreting high resolution seismic reflection data, 3) modeling paleoseismic intensities from mass wasting deposits stratigraphies. The paleoseismological record established by this work will be used to assess whether the Austral subduction zone is truly aseimic or whether it has experienced large megathrust earthquakes in pre-historical and instrumental time, with impact on geohazards for the region and on the geodynamics of subduction zones worldwide. The postdoc fellow will be part of a larger working group focused on understanding the structure and dynamics (including connections between tectonics and climate) of the Patagonian Andes, and will be encouraged to design projects and propose new research ideas.
