Position No. 00053946 - Postdoctoral Position in Biological Sciences
Department of Chemistry

Location: Dallas, TX
Open Date: Jun 01, 2023

Description:
Position Number: 00053946. Position available for a recent graduate with interest in the cardiorespiratory effects of ion channelopathies in epilepsy. The most common cause of mortality in epilepsy is sudden unexpected death (SUDEP). Although the exact causes of SUDEP remain unknown, seizures are thought to somehow initiate lethal cardiac and/or respiratory dysfunction. We are trying to understand the molecular mechanisms and risk biomarkers associated with SUDEP by examining mouse genetic epilepsy models using a combination of molecular approaches (immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, western blot), in vivo physiological recordings (electroencephalography, electrocardiography, plethysmography), and in vitro brain slice recordings. Additional information on our lab can be found at https://glasscock-lab.mozello.com/

Our lab is part of the vibrant and growing Department of Biological Sciences at Southern Methodist University (SMU). The department provides a supportive and stimulating research environment with a strong emphasis in neuroscience, including epilepsy and neurodegenerative disorders. Located near the heart of downtown Dallas, SMU is a nationally ranked private university distinguished as a center for global research and teaching and committted to academic freedom and open inquiry.

Qualifications:
Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent and been highly motivated and capable of working independently with a strong background in neuroscience, molecular biology techniques (including protein and RNA work), and/or mouse behaviorial analysis. Preferred applicants will also have experience in mouse genetics (especially conditional knockout models), brain slice electrophysiology, and/or cardio respiratory physiological approaches. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience.
