Assistant/Associate Vice Provost, Research Computing
About the Opportunity
The Assistant/Associate Vice Provost, Research Computing services is responsible for development and delivery of research and computationally intensive academic and high-performance computing infrastructure and services to Northeastern researchers, teaching faculty, and students throughout the University's global network, as well as their collaborators at other institutions. Under the direction of the Office of the Provost, and in consultation with researchers, the Assistant/Associate Vice Provost ensures development of leading-edge services and delivery of strong, faculty-centered, efficient support for established research computing functions. Oversees Director of Research Computing, and team focused on research computing. Provides leadership for collaborations related to research computing services.
Serves as a key strategic partner with Northeastern faculty, research departments, central and distributed information technology organizations, and programs to advance the institution's research mission. Works with the Senior Vice Provost for Research to create and maintain research computing strategic plan to support faculty research throughout the global network, utilizing a broad understanding of faculty, student, and staff expectations; understanding the trends and disruptive forces in research computing; building a shared, aspirational research computing support strategy for the university; and developing a plan to bring this strategy to fruition.
May be required to work outside their regular working hours and travel, to ensure that essential services are provided to the university community.
Please note that based off of the experience level of the candidate or Northeastern University need, the position could be either titled Associate Vice Provost - Research Computing or Assistant Vice Provost - Research Computing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's or Ph.D. in a field with a strong scientific computing component and eight years of experience working in a large-scale, advanced research computing environment, with a minimum of three years working in a research computing team.
- History of cultivating a collaborative strategy, with the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships that positively influence others to move toward a common vision or goal.
- Direct experience with research data management, tiered storage lifecycle strategies, and usage/cost optimization.
- Knowledge of batch processing, cluster management, and cloud orchestration techniques is essential.
- High-level knowledge with high-performance computing trends and technologies.
- Knowledge of file systems architecture and their effective use for storage and management of research data.
- Superior communication skills coupled with an ability to navigate a complex academic environment and work collaboratively with individuals at all levels.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex projects and initiatives.
- Knowledge of the decision-making process and structure of a large, complex educational institution, like Northeastern University, and ability to collaboratively build a community with key stakeholders and business unit leaders across the enterprise-reaching consensus and positively increasing IT's impact on the academic, research, and economic development mission of the university.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
1) Provides direction for all research computing services, ensuring appropriate researcher involvement, governance, service documentation, delivery, and support. Develops service strategy and design, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
2) Research Computing Services : Direct, adapt and expand research computing services in support of computationally intensive academic courses, ensuring provision of training and support for students and teaching faculty in the classroom and online.
3) Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC)
Collaborate with Northeastern faculty, fellows, and the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) on development of reusable environments and holistic computational solutions for researchers that expand the impact of Northeastern research within and beyond the university.
4) Research Computing Leadership
Develop and lead research computing collaborations that benefit Northeastern, especially related to the MGHPCC, and/or related regional or national research computing infrastructure.
5) Research & Academic Computing Projects
Plan, propose, and implement Northeastern research and academic computing projects: provide leadership, in conjunction with IT Project Board/IT Council governance bodies, to ensure alignment with Northeastern research, education, and technology strategies.
6) Develops short to mid-term plans for optimizing research computing functions and the talent required to execute strategies in job area. Ensures recruitment, management, and development of research computing staff with the appropriate skills and expertise to excel in the Northeastern environment across the global network, cultivating a high-performing team.
